Swim test

Expect a timed swim and rescue skills check during hiring.

Common questions

Standard American Red Cross lifeguard courses require you to be at least 15. Employers set their own minimum hiring age, often 15 or 16.

Most courses take about 25–30 hours, often over a weekend or a few evenings, and certifications are typically valid for two years.

Yes. Courses and employers require a timed swim, treading water and a brick retrieval or similar skills test.

Beach and open-water roles usually need extra waterfront or surf training because of currents, waves and larger areas.
